Executive function skills include those mental processes that enable us to plan, organize, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.

Below is a list of executive function skills, consider each and what role it plays in the decision making process:

  • Cognitive flexibility
  • Working memory
  • Inhibitory control
  • Selective attention
  • Focused attention
  • Managing time
  • Organizing thoughts and materials
  • Paying attention
  • Planning and prioritizing
  • Getting started (task initiation)
  • Staying on track
  • Remembering what to do and when to do it
  • Problem solving
  • Self-reflection
  • Managing emotions and impulses

When any of these are affected, it is challenging. When several of these executive functions are impacted, challenges are magnified.

We'll explore many of these cognitive skills in this section of the course.
